The city of Canyon and Randall County have made great
strides to revitalize downtown Canyon. The Canyon Main
Street program has helped several businesses and property
owners improve their facades over the past five years.
Randall County also pursued a large grant from the Texas
Historical Commission to restore the 1909 courthouse.
With everyone working in concert to improve the downtown
Square, the city has actively pursued creating a complete
Downtown Square Streetscape Plan (PDF) . The plan includes
the historic courthouse grounds, street lamps, paving
materials, business storefront design, and other elements.
Because of the poor condition of the sidewalks, pedestrian
walkways, and drainage issues a new streetscape is necessary
to address all of the issues. The master plan includes
a comprehensive restoration of the red brick pavers,
planters, attractive landscaping, compliant ADA areas,
as well as new storm water system. The streetscape project
will enhance the appearance of the town, provide a higher
quality of life and also be more pedestrian friendly
to residents as well as visitors. The City of Canyon
has applied for nomination and inclusion in the Statewide
Transportation Enhancement Program 2006 in hopes of
securing a large portion of funding for the project.
Canyon is the county seat for Randall County. In 2003
the County Commissioners voted to move forward with
restoration efforts of the 1909 courthouse. In the spring
of 2004 the county was awarded $322,365 in grant money
from the Texas Historical Commission for architectural
plans. The county will apply for Phase II funding in
the Spring of 2006. The Randall County Courthouse Restoration
Fund Board was formed in 2004. The goal of the board
is to raise enough money to ensure the building’s
prominence for future generations as well as $850,00
to match the second phase of state funding.
