Marian Batenhorst One of 7
kids-loaded up in the back of a Pontiac
Catalina-heading out, with a box lunch of
fried chicken mom made for all of us, to the
Tri-State Fair in Amarillo from our farm
outside of Umbarger. Our big highlight of
the annual trip was to get to take the
"highway" and see the "BIG cowboy".
Amelia Smith My family and I
moved here in 1963, and it was like a
foreign country to me, coming from Denver,
Colorado. Everyone and everything was so
Texan. All the people talked funny, it was
hot, and flat! Big Tall Tex was so
amazing!!! He was my first impression of
Texas.
